Automation & Robotics — Direct Drive Applications

Automation and robotics require rotary and linear motion that balances torque, dynamics and integration. As a ready-to-use module, the RDDS rotary direct-drive subsystem covers robot kinematics, automation handling axes and Pick & Place positioning tables in its official applications; torque motors provide the high torque needed for rotary joints and tables, and linear motors paired with Z-axis subsystems enable high-speed pick-and-place.

Requirements

Drive Challenges in Automation & RoboticsDrive challenges in automation & robotics

Rotary joints, handling axes and pick-and-place modules have differing requirements for torque, dynamics, integration and reliability.

Sufficient Torque for Rotary JointsSufficient Torque for Rotary Joints

Torque motors / RDDS

The rotary joints and tables of robot kinematics require sufficient torque and stiffness. Torque motors (RKI, RMK/RMF) or integrated RDDS subsystems should be used; the printed-circuit-board UPR has lower output and suits only lightweight, low-inertia rotary axes, not high-load joint drives.

Ready-to-Use IntegrationReady-to-Use Integration

RDDS: robot kinematics

Mechanism integration is complex and development schedules are tight. RDDS integrates motor, bearing, measuring system and cooling into a ready-to-use module, with official applications including robot kinematics and automation handling axes, greatly reducing assembly, adjustment and maintenance work.

High-Speed Pick & PlaceHigh-Speed Pick & Place

Z-axis acceleration up to 1,000 m/s²

Pick-and-place and handling pursue maximum throughput. Linear motors drive horizontal axes with high dynamics, Z-axis short-stroke actuators serve as fast vertical axes, and RDDS serves as a Pick & Place positioning table — the three forming a high-speed, high-repeatability pick-and-place module.

Maintenance-Free & ReliableMaintenance-Free & Reliable

Zero backlash · low wear

Automated production lines require long-term non-stop operation. Direct drive is contactless, wear-free and maintenance-free, and RDDS has zero backlash and low wear, ensuring the long-term stability and reliability of handling and pick-and-place at high cadence.

Collaborative Robot Joint Direct Drive
The joints of collaborative robots (cobots) require zero backlash, exceptionally smooth running, compact construction and precise force control and back-drivability. Frameless slotless iron-core torque motors RMK/RMF move exceptionally evenly with no cogging and low inertia, serving as a direct-drive solution for collaborative robot joints — eliminating gearbox backlash and improving force-control accuracy and safe interaction.
