Requirements

Core Linear Guideway Requirements for Machine Tools

The machine tool industry demands extremely high rigidity, accuracy, pulsation control and long-term durability from linear guideways, which directly affect the geometric accuracy and surface quality of machined parts.

High Rigidity & Heavy Load

Maximum static load 1,470,000 N

MR roller guideways use O-arrangement with 4-row logarithmic-crowned rollers, bearing loads evenly from all four directions. The MR 100 Type G achieves a maximum static load of 1,470,000 N, enabling precision handling of workpieces weighing up to 150 tons.

Full Accuracy Grade Coverage

G0 / G1 / G2 / G3 four accuracy grades

Four accuracy grades from G0 to G3 are available, covering everything from ultra-precision machining to general heavy cutting. System-ground matched guide rails ensure the geometric accuracy requirements of high-precision machine tools. All sizes and carriage types comply with DIN 645, and carriages and guide rails can be independently replaced and interchanged, simplifying maintenance and spare parts management.

Ultra-Low Pulsation

PULSE PRO: pulsation reduced by 2x

PULSE PRO 45 features 8-row rollers (2x the standard MR), reducing micro-pulsation by 2x and increasing rigidity by 18%. Ideal for ultra-precision grinding, micro-milling and other applications with extreme surface quality requirements.

Long Life & Contamination Resistance

4S design generation

The 4S design covers four key aspects: Simple maintenance (replaceable lateral wipers), Supply (pressure-sealed lubrication channels), Shock resistance (rigidity-optimized carriage body), and Soiling protection (robust front plates and stainless steel end plates).

Application Landscape

Machine Tool Applications & Guideway Selection

Machine tools can be subdivided into four major categories: cutting, grinding, non-cutting machining, and precision equipment, each with different requirements for rigidity, speed, accuracy and environmental resistance of linear guideways.

Cutting — Milling

Milling Machines

VMC Vertical Machining Center HMC Horizontal Machining Center 5-Axis Machining Center Gantry Milling Machine High-Speed Machine Mold & Die Machine Graphite Machine

Key requirements are rigidity and accuracy. General milling uses MR roller guideways; 5-axis and mold machining is recommended with AMS integrated measuring for closed-loop control; gantry milling machines with long travel can optionally use AMSABS 3L unlimited length measurement.

Cutting — Turning

Turning Machines

CNC Lathe Mill-Turn Machine VTL Vertical Turning Lathe Dual-Spindle Lathe

Turning high-speed feed relies on low-friction guideways. BM ball guideways achieve speeds up to 5 m/s and acceleration up to 100 m/s², ideal for high-speed feed requirements; heavy-cutting vertical turning lathes should choose MR roller guideways to handle high radial loads.

Cutting — Drilling

Drilling & Tapping

Drill-Tap Center PCB Drilling Machine Deep Hole Drill Structural Steel Drilling

Drill-tap centers pursue rapid repositioning, making BM ball guideways with high speed and acceleration the preferred choice. Structural steel drilling like the Peddinghaus case uses MR + AMS integrated measuring in high-load environments to ensure positioning accuracy for large workpieces.

Grinding

Grinding Machines

Surface Grinder Cylindrical Grinder Internal Grinder Tool Grinder Jig Grinder

Grinding has the most demanding micro-pulsation control requirements. PULSE PRO 45 with its 8-row roller design reduces pulsation by 2x and increases rigidity by 18%, specifically designed for ultra-precision grinding. The Strausak indexable insert grinder uses MONORAIL with AMS for closed-loop precision grinding.

Non-Cutting — EDM

Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM)

Wire EDM Sinker EDM Micro EDM

EDM has low travel speed but high accuracy requirements, with frequent contact with dielectric fluid in immersion environments. MR 4S design features multi-layer sealing wipers (including Viton fluoroelastomer option) and pressure-sealed lubrication channels, ensuring long-term stable operation in wet environments.

Non-Cutting — Laser & Waterjet

Laser & Waterjet Cutting

Laser Cutting Laser Welding Waterjet Cutting Plasma Cutting

Large gantry-type cutting equipment requires long-travel guidance and drive. BZ rack-integrated guideway combines guidance and helical gear rack drive, saving approximately 25% cost compared to separate installation, making it the ideal solution for laser cutting, waterjet, woodworking CNC and other large equipment.

Precision Equipment

Metrology & Precision Positioning

CMM Coordinate Measuring Machine Optical Metrology Precision Positioning Stage

Metrology equipment has the highest requirements for accuracy and smoothness, with some applications being sensitive to magnetic fields. Guideways must provide ultra-low pulsation and high positioning repeatability to ensure consistency and reliability of measurement results.

Precision Equipment

Semiconductor & Panel Equipment

Wafer Inspection Probe Station Packaging Equipment AOI Inspection PCB Printer

Semiconductor equipment demands ultra-high accuracy and clean environments. BM ball guideways achieve micron-level positioning; cleanroom environments can use BM WR/SR stainless steel versions, which are corrosion-resistant and suitable for vacuum environments.

Application Cases

Linear Guideway Applications in the Machine Tool Industry

The following are typical application scenarios for linear guideways in the machine tool industry, covering three major machine types: large-scale milling, mill-turn multi-tasking, and 5-axis machining.

Large moving column machining center
Large-Scale Milling
Large Moving Column Machining Center — Heavy Cutting & Long Travel
Large moving column machining centers have X-axis travel exceeding 60 m, used for machining large workpieces in energy, petrochemical, and transportation industries. Roller type linear guideways must withstand high loads and impact forces during heavy cutting while maintaining positioning accuracy over long travel. When axis travel exceeds the single guide rail length, the accuracy retention capability of jointed rail design becomes critical.

Mill-turn multi-tasking machine
Mill-Turn
Mill-Turn Multi-Tasking Machine — Multi-Axis Integration & High-Speed Feed
Mill-turn (multi-tasking) machines integrate turning and milling functions, completing multiple operations on a single setup. X/Y/Z linear axes require high-speed feed capability and high rigidity, and the positioning accuracy of the B-axis rotary head directly affects the geometric tolerances of multi-tasking machining. Linear guideways must simultaneously meet the stability of turning and the dynamic response of milling, placing extremely high demands on preload settings and rigidity.
Mill-Turn Multi-Axis High-Speed Feed
5-axis machining center structure
5-Axis Machining
5-Axis Machining Center — X/Y/Z Linear + A/C Rotary Axes
5-axis machining centers use X, Y, Z three linear axes combined with A, C two rotary axes to achieve single-setup machining of complex surfaces. The guideway accuracy and rigidity of the three linear axes directly determine the contour accuracy during 5-axis simultaneous machining. Mold, aerospace and other high-precision workpieces have extremely stringent requirements for micro-pulsation control and positioning repeatability.
