Machine Tool & Precision Manufacturing — MONORAIL Linear Guideway Applications
Schneeberger MONORAIL is the preferred precision linear guideway solution for the global machine tool industry, offering a complete size range from 25mm to the industry's largest 100mm, combined with the 4S design generation and PULSE PRO ultra-low pulsation technology, delivering exceptional rigidity and positioning accuracy for milling, turning, grinding and other high-precision machining applications.
The machine tool industry demands extremely high rigidity, accuracy, pulsation control and long-term durability from linear guideways, which directly affect the geometric accuracy and surface quality of machined parts.
MR roller guideways use O-arrangement with 4-row logarithmic-crowned rollers, bearing loads evenly from all four directions. The MR 100 Type G achieves a maximum static load of 1,470,000 N, enabling precision handling of workpieces weighing up to 150 tons.
Four accuracy grades from G0 to G3 are available, covering everything from ultra-precision machining to general heavy cutting. System-ground matched guide rails ensure the geometric accuracy requirements of high-precision machine tools. All sizes and carriage types comply with DIN 645, and carriages and guide rails can be independently replaced and interchanged, simplifying maintenance and spare parts management.
PULSE PRO 45 features 8-row rollers (2x the standard MR), reducing micro-pulsation by 2x and increasing rigidity by 18%. Ideal for ultra-precision grinding, micro-milling and other applications with extreme surface quality requirements.
The 4S design covers four key aspects: Simple maintenance (replaceable lateral wipers), Supply (pressure-sealed lubrication channels), Shock resistance (rigidity-optimized carriage body), and Soiling protection (robust front plates and stainless steel end plates).
From standard roller guideways to ultra-low pulsation advanced solutions, combined with integrated measuring systems, meeting the complete needs of the machine tool industry from general machining to ultra-precision manufacturing.
MONORAIL MR is the core product for the machine tool industry. O-arrangement with logarithmic-crowned rollers provides extremely high rigidity and load capacity. Size range 25-100, with the MR 100 being the largest roller guideway in the industry. DIN 645 compliant, 4S design generation.
PULSE PRO 45 doubles the roller rows from the standard 4 to 8, significantly reducing micro-pulsation and increasing rigidity, specifically designed for ultra-precision machine tools. Winner of the PLUS X AWARD 2025, ideal for grinding and micro-milling applications with the highest surface quality requirements.
The AMS system integrates magnetoresistive position measurement directly into the MONORAIL guide rail, eliminating the installation space and calibration time required for separate optical scales. The magnetoresistive principle offers superior contamination resistance against cutting fluid and dust compared to optical systems, suitable for harsh machine tool environments. Supports all major CNC controller interfaces.
Machine tools can be subdivided into four major categories: cutting, grinding, non-cutting machining, and precision equipment, each with different requirements for rigidity, speed, accuracy and environmental resistance of linear guideways.
Key requirements are rigidity and accuracy. General milling uses MR roller guideways; 5-axis and mold machining is recommended with AMS integrated measuring for closed-loop control; gantry milling machines with long travel can optionally use AMSABS 3L unlimited length measurement.
Turning high-speed feed relies on low-friction guideways. BM ball guideways achieve speeds up to 5 m/s and acceleration up to 100 m/s², ideal for high-speed feed requirements; heavy-cutting vertical turning lathes should choose MR roller guideways to handle high radial loads.
Drill-tap centers pursue rapid repositioning, making BM ball guideways with high speed and acceleration the preferred choice. Structural steel drilling like the Peddinghaus case uses MR + AMS integrated measuring in high-load environments to ensure positioning accuracy for large workpieces.
Grinding has the most demanding micro-pulsation control requirements. PULSE PRO 45 with its 8-row roller design reduces pulsation by 2x and increases rigidity by 18%, specifically designed for ultra-precision grinding. The Strausak indexable insert grinder uses MONORAIL with AMS for closed-loop precision grinding.
EDM has low travel speed but high accuracy requirements, with frequent contact with dielectric fluid in immersion environments. MR 4S design features multi-layer sealing wipers (including Viton fluoroelastomer option) and pressure-sealed lubrication channels, ensuring long-term stable operation in wet environments.
Large gantry-type cutting equipment requires long-travel guidance and drive. BZ rack-integrated guideway combines guidance and helical gear rack drive, saving approximately 25% cost compared to separate installation, making it the ideal solution for laser cutting, waterjet, woodworking CNC and other large equipment.
Metrology equipment has the highest requirements for accuracy and smoothness, with some applications being sensitive to magnetic fields. Guideways must provide ultra-low pulsation and high positioning repeatability to ensure consistency and reliability of measurement results.
Semiconductor equipment demands ultra-high accuracy and clean environments. BM ball guideways achieve micron-level positioning; cleanroom environments can use BM WR/SR stainless steel versions, which are corrosion-resistant and suitable for vacuum environments.
The following are typical application scenarios for linear guideways in the machine tool industry, covering three major machine types: large-scale milling, mill-turn multi-tasking, and 5-axis machining.
